Hi every one
Recently,I have come across an article,Which has really helped me to ponder about memeory issues.
Our memory makes us who we are, because without a memeory our life may seem blank.Memory is the treasury and guardian of all things. But what if you discover that our memory cant be trusted??
Recent Reseraces has shown that we may have memory of personal events which never happened. We can nurture many false memories -including that , related to mental or sexual abuse.
Researces have shown that false memories can be implanted through suggestive questions, specially which memeory is distant.Let us look in this example:
A number of people who witnessed an road accident a few while back, were asked by a researcher,"How fast were the car going when they smashed in to each other?"
Most of them estimeted the "speed" as the verb"smashed"were used. They will never consider the word "bumped" or "scarched" instead of "smashed". Since they were already influenced by the word "samshed" so they will relate it with the broken glass( as we generally use "smash",to convey the breaking of a glass or window),hence they has described how the headlights were smashed.
Such minor but significant error of memeory could lead in to something worst ,specially when police and lawyer interviewing witnesses.
Cognitive psychologist says many times wrong testimony were given which were born out of false conviction.
As we all know memeory fades, and constantly reacalling experience may cause us to invent incidents to fill in the gaps.It seems the very act of remembering causes memeories to become temporarily flexible-leading to "re-storage" in slightly revised form.
So we can take advantage of it while counselling a stress,anxeity,rape,war-victim even a post traumatic stress patient(PTSD),by replacing their true memeory by a false memory, which will help them to lead a trauma-free peaceful life. After all, "Everybody needs his memories. They keep the wolf of insignificance from the door. ~Saul Bellow"
what do u think?
